IMP Monthly Report | December 2020
December probably typified what a historically dichotomous year we experienced in 2020. Our market (as measured by the ASX 200 Index) managed to post a solid 1.06% gain for the month despite a heavy last day sell-off which all but robbed the index of posting a positive performance for the year. This added to the very strong move in November (near 10%), and was our third straight monthly gain (13.6% for the December quarter) as the dual optimism surrounding both COVID-19 vaccines and further fiscal and monetary stimulus kept investors chasing risk assets.
Over the year 2020, the index fell 1.45%, well below the average gain of 4.93% since the new millennia, however, it must be said that this is remarkably better than almost anyone would have expected at times earlier in the year.
Our market was down over 34% when we struck the lows on March 23rd, however, we then rallied 49.6% for the rest of the year (in fact, were up around 52% in early December before some minor weakness to end the month and year trimmed the gains). 2020 witnessed the fastest bear and bull markets in history, and proved a wild but rewarding year (including dividends the index rose 1.4%) for those with the intestinal fortitude to ride through the volatility and avoid selling out during those dark early days… Continue through to the full report here.
